John Lane serves at the State Higher Education Executive Officers Association (SHEEO) as the vice president for academic affairs and equity initiatives. He leads current development and review of academic policies, student access, and success, including direct admissions, college completion, student mental health and wellness, state authorization, and institutional financial viability. Before joining SHEEO, Lane served in a variety of roles, most recently as the director of academic affairs and licensing for the South Carolina Commission on Higher Education. He was responsible for policy development and assessment, including transfer, institutional missions, educator preparation, and interstate reciprocities. Lane also served as the chair of music theory at Wheaton College (Illinois) and associate vice president for academic affairs at Allen University. He holds a doctorate in musical arts in composition from the University of South Carolina and a master’s of divinity in scripture and interpretation from Harvard University.
