Amy Woolard is a writer and attorney living and working in Charlottesville and Richmond, VA. She is the chief program officer for the American Civil Liberties Union of Virginia, leading the organization’s legal, policy, and organizing teams on campaigns related to LGBTQ+ rights, criminal legal reform, voting rights, reproductive freedom, and an array of First Amendment issues. She has worked for legal aid and policy organizations, leading anti-racist and anti-poverty policy campaigns for more than 15 years in Virginia. Woolard has also published widely in places such as The New Yorker, The Guardian, and The Paris Review. Her first book, Neck of the Woods, won the Alice James Award and was published in 2020. She has been a National Endowment for the Arts fellow and currently holds a residency with UVA Karsh Institute of Democracy’s Sound Justice Lab. Additionally, Woolard co-teaches a seminar at UVA School of Law on the intersection of law, art, and justice.
