Karen C. Johnston is the Harrison Distinguished Professor of Neurology and associate vice president for clinical and translational research at the University of Virginia. She is the director of the integrated Translational Health Research Institute of Virginia (iTHRIV), the cross-state collaborative Clinical & Translational Science (CTSA) program funded by the National Institutes of Health and the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NIH-NCATS). Johnston’s research has focused on treatment and outcomes in acute ischemic stroke. She is the contact principal investigator for the iTHRIV NIH-NCATS–supported clinical and translational research program that is focused on using data to improve health. She is also a member of the NCATS-CTSA steering committee. Johnston is a member of the NIH Council of Councils and attended medical school and neurology residency at the University of Rochester Strong Memorial Hospital. She did her vascular neurology fellowship at the University of Virginia and earned a master’s degree in clinical research. Johnston is board certified in general neurology and vascular neurology.
