Nancy Shapiro

Nancy S. Shapiro is associate vice chancellor for education and outreach and special Assistant to the chancellor for P-20 initiatives at the University System of Maryland (USM). She leads system-wide partnerships with public schools in Maryland, supporting college and career readiness and promoting teacher recruitment, retention, quality, quantity, and diversity. She leads the USM’s civic education and civic engagement work, implementing general education reform and student engagement across 12 institutions. Prior to coming to USM, Shapiro was the founding executive director of the College Park Scholars Living Learning Program at the University of Maryland and director of the University of Maryland Writing Program. Author of numerous articles and books, Shapiro earned her Ph.D. in education from University of Maryland and graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Brandeis University. She holds the rank of research scholar in the College of Education, Department of Teaching, Learning, Policy, and Leadership, at the University of Maryland.
