In 2021, a team of 300 scholar-practitioners released a new Educating for American Democracy (EAD) roadmap, with goals to give 60 million students access to high-quality civic learning in both civics and history and create 100,000 schools that are “civic ready” by 2030. Where is EAD gaining ground and how is it affected by the latest era of culture wars? What do leaders seek from higher education to help them meet their goals? And what can the higher education civic movement learn from EAD’s work to date? Education experts explore EAD’s approach to civics inquiry, and—using Maryland as a case study—examine strategies for connecting the K-12 and postsecondary civic learning movements.
