Director of Communications
Erin Tor is the inaugural director of communications for UVA’s Karsh Institute of Democracy. Prior to her role at the Karsh Institute, Erin led communications for UVA’s Frank Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy for nearly five years as the school’s director of communications and marketing. From 2010 to 2016, Erin served in a variety of senior positions at the Peace Corps, including global press director, deputy communications director, and acting communications director, positions appointed by President Obama. During her time at the Peace Corps, Erin led communications for the agency’s Let Girls Learn program, an initiative launched by First Lady Michelle Obama, and worked with Peace Corps volunteers around the world to capture and tell their stories. In 2017, Erin was appointed by Washington, DC, Mayor Muriel Bowser to serve as communications director for the city’s health and human services portfolio. She was selected as a member of the Obama Administration’s Public Affairs Leadership Program and is a recipient of the Peace Corps’ Distinguished Service Award and the Batten School’s Staff Excellence Award.
