UVA's Karsh Institute of Democracy invites proposals for Working Groups for the 2024–2025 academic year. Please submit your proposal by April 1, 2024.
We welcome proposals that address contemporary or enduring challenges to democracy, broadly understood. The Working Groups can be directed or co-directed by faculty members from any UVA school or unit, and we encourage proposals which bring together members from different schools and units. Successful proposals will primarily support the development of collaborations among faculty at UVA around shared themes or issues but across areas and disciplines. We also encourage work with students and other collaborators, such as practitioners, artists, journalists, policy-makers and activists.
We invite proposals with budgets from $15,000 to $20,000 for one year for activities between July 1, 2024 and July 1, 2025.
Please submit the following materials in Word or pdf form, in separate or combined documents, via attachments to submissions.karsh@virginia.edu.
- A statement of no more than 1,000 words outlining the central issues and questions that will guide the work of the Working Group, explaining the nature and goals of the collaborations to be pursued.
- The leader(s) of the Working Group (for determining the cost center for the award period)
- A list of Working Group members
- A brief outline of proposed activities and a proposed schedule
- A budget for proposed activities
- CVs of only the proposed faculty leader(s)
As you plan your proposal, please note that Working Group funding can support:
- Expenses related to on-campus meetings of the Working Group
- Travel/lodging for visitors for events or residencies
- Funding for workshops or conferences on the Working Group focus
- Travel for UVA Working Group members participating in collaborative research, field visits, or meetings in other locations
- Hiring undergraduate or graduate students to support the Working Group's activities and research (including research support, stipends, or wages for students offering administrative support).
Important dates:
- Notifications will be provided in May 2024.
- Research funds will be made available by July 1, 2024 and must be used by June 30, 2025, at which time any unused funding will return to the Karsh Institute.
- In early spring 2025, new working groups may submit an application for a second year of funding (through a no-cost extension or additional funding) based on the work done during the current award year.
- All working groups must submit an activities report to the Karsh Institute by June 1, 2025.
