'Ends of War'
Caroline Janney, Elizabeth Varon
Caroline E. Janney, UVA professor of history and director of the Nau Center for Civil War History, discusses her 2022 Gilder Lehrman Lincoln Prize–winning book, Ends of War: The Unfinished Fight of Lee’s Army After Appomattox, in a conversation moderated by Elizabeth Varon, UVA professor of American history. They will explore the immediate aftermath of the US Civil War and the ways in which continued military and political uncertainty, legal and logistical confusion, and continued violence laid the groundwork for many of the challenges American democracy would face.
The Nau Lab's “Touchstones of Democracy” series explores key events, places, thinkers, and texts that inform the history and principles of democracy. Join us for the fall 2023 conversations, which are produced by the Karsh Institute of Democracy and the College and Graduate School of Arts & Sciences. WATCH THE VIDEO:
