Tom Tom Festival: The Future of Local Journalism

A diverse and vibrant local news ecosystem is a critical element of a healthy democratic culture, keeping people informed and engaged with their communities and institutions. A panel of journalists working in the Charlottesville area discuss the current state of local journalism and possible solutions to reinvigorate the industry and ensure that the needs of local communities are being met.
This event is co-hosted by the Karsh Institute of Democracy and CVILLE Weekly and sponsored by Sentara Martha Jefferson. This event is part of the Society & Justice track of the 2024 Tom Tom Festival. A ticket is required to attend.

Richard DiCicco is the editor of C-VILLE Weekly, a long-running alternative weekly newspaper in Charlottesville, Virginia. While DiCicco is involved with every aspect of the paper's editorial content, he also has contributed many cover stories and news articles to the publication, often covering local phenomena like the city's surprisingly robust arcade video game scene and the infamous "chicken strip" traffic jam on Route 29.
In addition to his work at C-VILLE, DiCicco is also a fiction and poetry writer and has spent years on indie radio as a DJ and talk-show host. He earned his bachelor's degree in art history at Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts and his master's in American journalism at the New York University Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute.

Angilee Shah is the CEO and editor-in-chief of the nonprofit news organization Charlottesville Tomorrow, in Central Virginia. She is a coach for news organizations and journalism change makers around the country who specializes in building teams, budgets, and editorial strategy for people and communities too often left out of media narratives. Shah spent six years in public media as a founding editor of Global Nation, the world’s coverage of immigration in the United States, where in one year she brought 50 new contributors to the program. As a reporter and editor, Shah's work has been read and heard around the world, including a book about everyday lives in China and a trio of investigative stories about the end of Sri Lanka’s 30-year civil war.

Courteney Stuart is a veteran print and broadcast journalist who's spent 25 years covering Charlottesville news. She is the host of Charlottesville Right Now on WINA and previously worked as an investigative reporter and editor for the Hook and C-VILLE Weekly newspapers and reported on-air for CBS19 News. She is the co-producer of the Small Town Big Crime podcast and was featured in the 2023 global Netflix hit series Till Murder Do Us Part: Soering vs. Haysom. Stuart is currently developing several other investigative docuseries.

Allison Wright is the executive editor and publisher of the Virginia Quarterly Review. Her writing has appeared in the Atlantic, the Guardian, CNN, VQR, Popular Mechanics, and elsewhere. She teaches media ethics and journalism in the master's program at NYU and at the University of Virginia, where she is an affiliate of the Center for Health Humanities & Ethics. She holds a PhD from the University of Texas at Austin.
