On November 5, 2024, the United States held a free and fair election—a hallmark of democratic government—and a majority of Americans reported that democracy was one of their top priorities. In an ABC News exit poll, more voters saw it as threatened (73%) than secure (25%).
The Karsh Institute is focused on several areas that are essential for a vibrant democracy—working with students, scholars, and leaders in various sectors to develop solutions that support good governance and meaningful engagement in civic life, with a focus on four key priorities:
- Engaged Dialogue
We support collaborative problem solving and foster the competencies needed for individuals to participate in civic life, including the skills and capacities to engage in discussion and debate across differences.
- Responsive and Effective Institutions
We convene experts and generate resources so that elected and appointed leaders can be responsive to trends influencing democracy and their constituents—and so that constituents can better hold their leaders accountable.
- Accessible and Reliable Information
The rapid transformation of technology has reshaped what information is available, its trustworthiness, and the ways in which individuals consume it. We work to improve access to credible and trusted information so people can be well-informed about the issues that matter to them.
- Economic Systems and Civic Representation
Democracy and capitalism have long been connected—and we explore their relationship, including how social and economic status can impact civic participation and representation.
